Rear shock question
« on: August 20, 2014, 07:42:34 PM »

Hey guys i have a suspension question. Im building an 02 zx6r as a track only bike. I have race tech springs up front. But my question is about the rear shock.   I have a rear shock of an 06 zx6r and a Penske 8981 shock that has been sitting for awhile. and i have no idea what weight spring is on the penske.  So im wondering which shock would be the best to install on the bike? I have never ran a penske and dnt know much about them..

Whats your weight? I thinking finding out what spring is on the Penske is your first priority.

The Penske will be way better and having it set up for that bike with the correct spring is as easy as sending it a suspension tuner. If it's been sitting for a while you should have it serviced anyway. There are lots of guys who can work on it but give Steve Breckenridge from Fluidology a call. He can also tune the other shock if you decided to do that, but to me the Penske is a no-brainer.

:agree:  Steve is the man. He refreshed my Penske at the beginning of the season.

This is from Penske and should get you in the ballpark.  Springs and sag are tunable, it doesn't have to be a set to a exact number.  Typically 8 - 12 mm free sag and 25-30 mm total sag is a good starting point for a Penske.  Penske says 6-12 free and 22-35 total, but I tend to shoot for the numbers I stated
