Camping at RA - good idea or bad idea?
« on: December 26, 2020, 12:01:29 PM »

Hi all, back when I had hair and teeth and last did track days, I only ever did day trips.  Never camped out at a track.  But I'm thinking of camping Fri-Sat-Sun night at RA in April.  Do you have any comments or suggestion - for or against - camping at the track?  Thanks!

Yeah camping there is just fine. And if by camping you mean tent camping also fine, many do it. Plus April is a great time of year because it won't be too hot at night.

Perfectly fine idea!
I pitch my tent right on the paddock at my pit site every year. I stack two of the lightweight (for backpacking) "self-inflating" foam/air sleeping pads, and it's not too bad, even for my middle-aged bones.

You can camp Friday and Saturday night, but I'm pretty sure you won't be able to camp at the track Sunday night. You'll definately want to look into that (Maybe you could make an arrangement with the facility?).

Thanks for all the great info guys.  As long as the weather isn't terrible, I'm gonna do it.

Maybe unnecessary info, but... Forgot to mention, if tenting on pavement, you'll probably want some sand bags. For each corner, I use about 33 pounds in a plastic bag (so they don't soak up water) inside a pillowcase. Zip-tied to the stake straps, they work decently well. RA isn't usually as windy as VIR by my recollection, but one never knows; the late afternoon/evening storms do pop up now and again.

Yep, I do. I like pitting close-ish to the track entrance and tenting right at my pit (saves lots of time), and that means pitching on the pavement. I think there might be some grassy bits by the upper paddock, but I’ve never pitted there.
