Great article in RRW.

Also a question. How many of you PRE fill your oil filters before installing?

I’ve been draining my oil cold. And I don’t prefill the filter.

Should start pre filling.

I drain cold about half the time as long as not in 40s in the garage.
Frankly unless you are draining oil cooler in the R1 you aren’t really changing the oil.

Keeps from having an air gap in oil system until it can purge on its own.

Very interesting.  Looks like I will be draining cold from now on.  Sounds good to me. I always add oil to the filter before installing.

Keep in mind if you have an oil cooler and you are not draining that hot / cold doesn’t matter.

If you do drain it. Make certain to fill just like you would a filter prior to reinstall or prime your motor before running.

This is going to save me lots of time. Thanks, Ruhe and RRW!
And I will pre-fill henceforth.

Hmmm - interesting article. OK - I'm in; draining cold seems easier anyway! Have also always pre-filled the filter....and let it settle so you don't have a big air bubble and just half full.

Ruhe - do you have any recommendations/tricks for draining the oil cooler on an R1? I haven't done that yet and have always drained from pan. You make a good point about remaining oil in the cooler and not completely changing oil if you're not swapping that out as well.

I typically drain my motorcycles cold - because I have plenty of time to remove the plug and let things sit...

But prefilling the filter isn't something I've ever done - how would that work with my R6(s) oil filter being perpendicular to the ground? Fill it only partially?

Fill it up this takes time in that it will burp down over time.
Once full wipe a little oil on the o ring tip and spin. Yes you will have some oil leak while doing this.
I cover pipes and other areas with foil set up to funnel the mess into my catch pan.
