tire size
« on: June 10, 2019, 09:45:07 AM »

Ordering a set of tires...   on my GSXR 600 I've been running 190/55's.  There's a lot of info out THERE about what is better for a 600 and the smaller 5.5 rim vs the bigger bike 6 inch rims.

At CCS this weekend, I was around and observed a lot of tires and am considering going with a 180/60, which is the size of a set I picked up for someone and certainly used by other 600's I saw.

Thoughts?  I'm ordering these soon (now??) so if you have any immediate thoughts, don't be shy.

180/60 or 190/55 ???

I say keep running the tire that’s working for you. I assume you are talking about a Dunlop 190/55 slick?

I am now running Michelin Power Slicks, and have been on Dunlop Q'3s prior to that.

This past weekend, I found out the Q3 no longer suffices as my 'wet weather' Intermediate tire.  At least not on the current set which *may* be a little worn.  Rather than a set of full rains, I am going to try a set of the Michelin Power RS as 'Intermediates' for those days where it is too damp to confidently go out on slicks, or in changing conditions as we experienced at CCS.

Wait, now I’m confused. Are you talking about the tire size for slicks or the intermediate tire?

If the new intermediate tire I would probably go with the same size you are running with your slicks.

The difference from 180 to 190 is a lot about preference. At some point you will want to try different sizes. But I’m a believer in keeping as much stuff constant while you are still in the early stages of the learning curve. So If it’s working now don’t mess with it too much and just ride.

Dunlop no longer makes the 190/55-17 slick.  What is available is the 180/60-17 that would suit your 5.5 rim perfectly.  Super sticky and available in several compounds
