We are going to run the chicane at the full course event in July. Initial impressions through testing it are that it will work well. The goal with this is no different than utilizing airfence at our events. We will be doing this in an effort to make the day safer by slowing the top speeds down on the back straight. We've been through course configuration changes at Road Atlanta twice, and this shouldn't be any different. After an initial period where the riders will adapt to the different layout, we'll then see if really does add the new element of fun that we think that it will by offering another passing opportunity on the brakes, and bringing the big and smaller bike lap times closer together. Hopefully this will be a side benefit to adding the safety aspect of slower top speeds.

For me personally I've always been ready to do something else by the time I get to the top of the hill, but instead you just have to keep going, and going, and going... then turn. I'm really looking forward to this change, and I think (hope) that others will think it actually makes the Full Course more fun.

Thanks for the info, John!
I was planning not to do full course until yesterday when it switched to a possible maybe for no real reason other that the fact that I will have already driven all the way up. Now, with this new info, it’s much more likely that I will ride it.
Thanks to everyone involved in this decision.

No problem. Glad the response is good so far. I'm sure that won't be universal but change is never accepted by everyone.

What chicane are we talking about?  That popout on the left at the end of the south course front straight?  If so that actually sounds like it might be fun.

As long as they don't mess with the esses going up the hill to the south course I'll be happy. That's my favorite section of any racetrack I've ever ridden.

Nice!! Loving it!
Personally, I think 3 day event structures are great - Particularly, when held at VIR, where you can change configurations to keep it fresh!! :adore:
Hoping to ride the VIR Full configuration everyone keeps raving about.
Also looking fwd to the VIR S/S/S Fundraiser event.
Lastly, What's better than Rd. Atlanta in July? Rd. Atlanta in May!!  Woot!!  :D  (It may be very good timing for the org, as well!)

The chicane was a blast! I got the privilege to test it out last month and I feel like once everyone figures it out it will be a fun ride. There is a lot over elevation change from pit out at south to the top of the hill, everything is up hill. It was fun to be on the brakes that hard while turning left into the chicane, slamming the bike over on the right hand side and feathering the throttle out to get the perfect drive over the crest. I'm looking forward to it for sure!

It definitely slows down the back straight, but you are still well into triple digits before and after the chicane. Definitely one of those situations where slow in, fast out is the best approach

Nice this looks like it will be a blast to ride. I would peppered Joe will a bazillion questions when we were relaxing at Patriot last month.
Of course I got FIRE STOMPING DRUNK and am just now recalling the answers to those questions.
I think this will add some safety and fun without giving up much if anything.

I would have got the premium membership, but would have to ride my bicycle because I couldn't afford gas or tires for the bmw ;). But I did snag a Performance membership this year.  Come on RA!

Hey Dirt, after you come out of the chicane, does the bike want to lift the front going up over the hill?
